Personal Statement
My name is Stephanie Woodford and I am an international affairs major with a minor in humanitarian affairs.
Issues regarding humanitarian affairs have always sparked my
interest. However, during my junior year of college I studied abroad through
Semester at Sea and visited twelve different countries from Spain to Japan. During the
course of our travels I was able to participate in service trips such as traveling
to an orphanage in Ghana to provide food. Before I went abroad it was difficult to imagine
what life was really like in other countries. It was an experience that truly opened
my eyes and made me even more interested in humanitarian and
international affairs. However, after taking this course, HUMN 201, I have realized that there is still much
more for me to learn about other cultures and humanitarian crises across the
globe. I had been aware of many of the topics touched on in this class, but I had never
been introduced to many of the details involved. I plan to continue learning and working
in areas regarding humanitarian affairs. And after taking this course I hope
that I will remember to look more in depth into crises that I hear about in the
news or mentioned in a conversation because I have realized that I have missed
out on many important facts when I do not dig deeper.
